Your bed

This bed needs coordinates

To work out frost risk, daylight and growing degree days, the bed in Notion needs the latitude and longitude of the garden.

  1. On a computer, open Google Maps and find the garden.
  2. Right-click the spot. The first line of the menu is the coordinates, for example 44.3500, -81.5000. Click the numbers to copy them. (On a phone: press and hold the spot, then copy the numbers from the search box.)
  3. In Notion, open the bed in your Beds database. Paste the first number into Latitude and the second number (keep the minus sign) into Longitude.
  4. Open the bed link again.

Latitude is between −90 and 90; longitude is between −180 and 180. West of Greenwich (all of North America) longitude is negative.

Frost risk

Each night's figure is that day's lowest forecast temperature, which normally falls just before dawn. Hard frost is −2 °C or below, frost is 0 °C or below, and frost risk is 2 °C or below — because on a clear, still night the ground and the leaves on it radiate heat away and go several degrees colder than the air a forecast measures.

This is a forecast for the next few days, not a frost date. Your first and last frost, your hardiness zone and your planting dates depend on your own site and the year — a hollow, a wall or a slope can shift them by weeks. Record yours in the template as you learn them; this page will not guess them for you.

Growing degree days are accumulated at base 10 °C across the forecast window only. This is not a season total.
